Yemen
South of Taiz
September 1984
My driver (sitting on rock) was obstinate---and so was I. He wouldn't take me where I wanted to go, so I got out of the vehicle and told him I'd find my way back to Taiz on my own (approx. 30 miles). He did leave me on my own for awhile, but later sent the police after me because the travel of visitors on tourist visa is supposed to be restricted. I spent a couple of hours in a remote police station trying to explain to Arabic speaking policemen that I wasn't a spy or a dangerous character-just obstinate.
